Daikin History

The Japanese company Daikin was founded by Akira Yamada in 1924., initially as Osaka Metalworking Industries LP. Over the years, the firm grew and made progress in different fields related to air care.

In 1938 it began to produce refrigerators, and In 1953 he developed Daiflon or polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE), a thermoplastic with high tensile strength and interesting properties, with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, a high limiting oxygen index and good chemical resistance.

In 1957 he developed the first rotary compressor, and In 1958 the first semi-industrial heat pump equipment was released..

In 1963 it adopted its current name, Daikin Industries, Ltd.

In 1969 he developed his first multi-split.

The company continues its expansion, and In 1973 it settled in Europe, with its headquarters in Ostend (Belgium), considered the most advanced air conditioning products factory on the old continent.. In these facilities, which have more than 50.000 m2, more than 90% of the machines destined for the European market are produced.

In 1982, the first VRV system was developed. (Variable Refrigerant Volume), with a first installation in Japan. VRVs are air conditioning systems for large surfaces, such as shopping centers, hotels or hospitals, for example.

In 1994, Daikin became the first company in the Japanese air conditioning sector to obtain the ISO 9001 quality standard., and in 1997 all its factories in Japan obtained ISO 14001 environmental certification.

In 2002, the firm obtained the award for the protection of the ozone layer.

In 2003, it opened another factory in Europe, located in the Czech Republic.

In 2006 it launched the sophisticated Altherma system on the market., air conditioning and hot water by aerothermal energy, which extracts energy from the air to produce heating, cooling and domestic hot water, and works with radiators, fan coils or underfloor heating.

Also in 2006, Daikin acquired the American McQuay International, a global corporation headquartered in Minneapolis, that designs, manufactures and sells heating, ventilation and air conditioning products, as well as OYL Industries, one of the world's largest manufacturers of air conditioning.
