In the past, all sled vacuum cleaners were bagged. The bag has the advantage that it is easier to get rid of dirt, although they may have the disadvantage that, as the bag fills, they lose some suction capacity (although today there are improvements in the design of the bags , such as the S-bag, which avoid this problem).
Dyson, inventor of the cyclone system in vacuum cleaners
Almost 40 years ago, British industrial designer James Dyson, creator of the famous brand that bears his name, observed that his vacuum cleaner was losing suction power as the bag filled, concluding that it was becoming clogged by dust, and decided to look for a remedy.
To do this, he studied how to apply the cyclone system used in a sawmill he had visited to domestic vacuum cleaners. The cyclone system was used in industries such as the lumber industry (to separate sawdust), the oil industry (to separate oils and gases) or in industrial kitchens (to separate grease).
Cyclones are widely used when separating components in different states. (solids from gases, or solids from liquids), due to their great simplicity and hardly requiring maintenance.
History of the cyclonic vacuum cleaner
Dyson made a prototype from his old vacuum cleaner, using cardboard cyclones and tape, and verified that the system worked. From there, he began to work on the design of the cyclonic vacuum cleaner, for which he had to make more than 5.000 attempts, until reaching the final one.
However, Dyson still did not have it easy, since vacuum cleaner manufacturers did not seem too interested in the new system.
Finally, Dyson managed to sign an agreement with a Japanese company, which allowed him to start putting his design into practice.. He began selling his product through a catalog in the Asian country, achieving quite a bit of popularity.
With the money earned in Japan, seven years later, he began manufacturing under the Dyson brand, achieving great success in Great Britain, since, in just a year and a half, it became the best-selling vacuum cleaner.
From there, other manufacturers also began to launch their bagless vacuum cleaners on the market, based on this system. Suction capacity is the fundamental argument.

How a cyclonic vacuum cleaner works
The cyclonic system takes advantage of the high speed of the air and the design of the cyclones, in a conical shape, to separate materials of different densities., in this case, the solids (the dust), the gases (the air that transports them).
The shape of the cyclone achieves a high-speed swirl, from the widest part of the cyclone to the narrowest. The clean air rises through the center of the vortex, while the heavier dust particles fall downward., due to the effect of its own weight and when hitting the narrowest walls.
Advantages of cyclonic vacuum cleaners
- Maintains suction power: the design of the bags has improved (as we indicated at the beginning, there are already bags that avoid this problem), but the cyclonic system really achieves it, by creating centrifugal forces at high speed, which cause the particles to fall into the tank, avoiding obstructions.
- Less forced engine: Bagged vacuum cleaners can have the problem that, as the bag becomes fuller, the motor needs to work harder to maintain suction (which is why it is often recommended to change the bag before it is completely full). Meanwhile, cyclonic vacuum cleaners can continue with the same suction power without the motor suffering.
- Se save on maintenance: bags are still another expense, which you can save if you have a cyclonic vacuum cleaner.
Robot vacuum cleaners are the device that is succeeding in the market, due to the comfort they provide. If you want more information about them, you can visit our articles:
Thank you very much for the information
Hello, Rosa Magdalena, thank you for visiting our website.
We are glad that you found it interesting, and we hope that you do well with your new vacuum cleaner 🙂
All the best
How interesting the information, I just bought a multi-cycle vacuum cleaner, it may not be the best but I didn't know about this system.
I always used a bag, but since they changed to ecological bags, they really didn't work for me, my last vacuum cleaner is Ultracom and since the bags broke the motor filled with dust, I took it to the service but there is no solution and yesterday I bought a SMARTLIFE vacuum cleaner MULTICLONIC, maybe it's a little small but in the supermarkets you can't find anyone to guide you so
I chose this one, I hope it turns out the same for me, I don't have many meters to vacuum.
Enter the page to find out why it is called that and I was interested. Thank you very much and wish me luck with the product
